Jens Elvekjær, Piano

Reviews

Significant
Jyllandsposten, 14 March 2010

'Jens Elvekjær was soloist in Beethoven Piano Concerto no. 3 with the Copenhagen Philharmonic which has maintained its excellent match form throughout the season. Not only does he have an understanding and command of the structure and a solid attack, which matches this first concerto of Beethoven of real significance. He also made the slow movement stand calm and introvert. Both here and in the rapid outer movements he does not only play the music but is constantly extracting its meaning and demands from the music that it has something to say both to him and to the listeners.'

Thrilling Pianist
Helsingør Dagblad, 21 January 2009

Jens Elvekjær is the kind of pianist who allows the music to speak for itself. He adds only his own feeling of space and time. This was clearly heard in his very fine 'Theme With Variations' by Carl Nielsen. It shone and bubbled throughout.
The same was the case with Schubert's Piano Sonata no. 19 in C minor. The sounds and depths in this piece was a journey in the world of a dying composer. We are grateful to Schubert and particularly when his music is played by a pianist of Jens Elvekjær's qualities.
The major piece in the concert was Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition'. Elvekjær added colourful nuances to the pictures and even the promenades took on a new meaning. The last movement ' The Great Gate in Kiev' was outstanding. The piano sounded of large and small bells and I do not recall the pictures described more vividly.
Standing ovations from a thrilled audience which was rewarded with one of Schubert's lovely Impromptu's. One cannot wish for more.

Excellent Jens Elvekjær
Berlingske Tidende, 18 October 2008

Danish pianist Jens Elvekjær was the most musical feature in the concert with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra DR. His playing is absolutely superb. Few pianists play more musically, more sensitively and better heard. Or if you wish, more interesting. He belongs to the growing number of world class Danish soloists.

Brilliant Soloist
Jyllandsposten, 18 October 2008

Jens Elvekjær was soloist in Koppel's 3 Piano Concerto, so strongly influenced by Bartok and Prokofiev. He played the solo part with an impressively thoroughly prepared combination of sensitivity and brilliance.

Superpianist Saved The Evening
Politiken, 18 October 2008

Jens Elvekjær is perhaps best known in connection with Trio con Brio, and in Koppel he had the opportunity to show what an excellent soloist he is.
The first and third movements were tied up in pulsing, rhythmic patterns, whilst the very original second movement was allowed to breathe freely with surging, warmblooded strings and a hot tempered pianist in opposition to the orchestra. There was room for Elvekjær's light and elegant playing.

First Class Piano Festival
Upsala Nya Tidning, 1 September 2008

Jens Elvekjær played Schubert's Impromptu in C minor, Op. 90. His playing can be characterised by an unequalled concentration which resulted in a continuous flowing beauty, a little melancholic and very compelling. His interpretation of Schubert's Sonata in C minor D.958 brought forward all the emotions portrayed in the music, from the most beautiful sadness to an almost brutal and insisting brutality. He was completely in control and his playing was crystal clear.
