Biography

Mathias Hedegaard is a lyric, expressive tenor with a fine and unique understanding of poetry and text. He is the finest interpreter of Danish Lieder of his generation and is a frequent and favourite guest with Danish presenters.

Recent engagements include the world premiere of 'Snehvides spejl' by Niels Marthinsen - at the Aarhus Summer Opera in summer 2011. Spring 2012 brings Mathias to Värmlandsoperan, Sweden where he will participate in a stage performance of Bach's St. John's Passion.
In summer 2012 he will be part of the recording of Schierbeck's 'Fête Galante' with Danish National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Schønwandt to be released on the Dacapo label.

Mathias Hedegaard made his operatic debut at the Royal Opera as Gastone LA TRAVIATA in 2006. Other opera appearances include Acis ACIS AND GALATHEA at the Innsbruck Opera, Austria, Male Chorus RAPE OF LUCRETIA, the title role in ORFEO in Copenhagen, and he premiered the double role Daniel/Verner GIFT OF EDEN by Hvidfeldt Nielsen at the Aarhus Summer Opera, Trin in LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST and Gastone in LA TRAVIATA at the Danish National Opera and Sellem RAKE'S PROGRESS at the Royal Danish Opera.

Mathias Hedegaard has appeared as soloist with the majority of Danish symphony orchestras, Concerto Copenhagen, with orchestras in Sweden and Germany in pieces like Händel's Messiah, The Christmas Oratorio, the Evangelist in St. John's passion, Haydn: The Creation and Mozart Requiem. He has worked with conductors like Adam Fischer, Andrew Parrott, Giancarlo Andretta, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Christoph Eberle and Roy Goodman. He has also toured Holland with the highly respected baroque ensemble De Nederlandse BachVereiniging as soloist in St. Matthew Passion led by Lars Ulrik Mortensen.

Lied concerts are very important to Mathias Hedegaard, and he has given recitals all over Denmark, most recently in the Danish Radio new concert hall, in Sweden, Scotland and Austria, His regular accompanists are Tove Lønskov and Søren Rastogi.

Mathias Hedegaard has released several recordings; Songs by Danish composer Weyse, accompanied by Marie Rørbech, ' Serenades and Romances' with the Danish Radio Sinfonietta, conducted by Adam Fischer, which was reviewed with great acclaim in all papers and was awarded 5 stars, 'Italian Baroque' with Copenhagen Saxophone Quartet, and his most recent recording is Cantatas by Carl Nielsen with Aarhus Symphony Orchestra.

Rewards and prizes include Edit Aller's Memorial Grant (2001) Gladsaxe Music Prize (2006), Léonie Sonning Music Foundation Scholarship (2006), the Axel Schiøtz Prize (2006), the Artist Prize awarded by the Danish music reviewers (2007), The Hartmann Brothers Special Prize and Prince Henrik's Grant, 2009.

Mathias Hedegaard graduated from the Danish Opera Academy in 2007 after studies with Professor Kirsten Buhl. Previous studies at the Royal Music Academy Copenhagen with exam in 2004.
