Biography

Niovi Klavdianou has developed from a lyric soprano of singular style and expression into a dramatic soprano who is poised to take on some of the great roles of the operatic repertoire.

Originally from Greece, Niovi trained as an actor at Drama School Parathlasis before studying voice at the Synchronon Conservatory of Thessaloniki, where she graduated with the Special Prize for vocal interpretation. She continued her studies on the Opera Program of Maryland State University, receiving her Masters in 2005. She later read for a doctorate in vocal performance, researching and performing works on the theme of children by more than 25 composers in eleven different languages. Niovi was recipient of the Opera Award scholarship at Maryland State University for five consecutive years and was a fellow of the Alexander S Onassis Public Benefit Foundation from 2003 to 2009.

Niovi has appeared at Opera Theatre of the Rockies, the National Theatre of Catalonia, the National Theatre of Greece, the Baltimore Opera, the Marseille Opera and the Lucca Opera Festival among other companies and festivals. Her operatic roles have included Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Vitellia in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, Agathe in Weber’s Die Freischütz, Liù in Puccini’s Turandot, Santuzza in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Marguerita in Boito’s Mephistophele.

As an oratorio soloist, Niovi has sung Verdi’s Requiem at St Martin in the Fields in London, Britten’s War Requiem in Winchester Cathedral, Bruckner’s Te Deum and Psalm 125 at the Philharmonie in Berlin, Theodorakis’s Raven at St Vitus Cathedral in Prague, Beethoven’s Symphony No 9 at the Brandenburg Gate and Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder at Potzdamer Platz, both in the German capital where she makes her home.

Niovi is fluent in seven languages and is known for lieder recitals as well as for her work as an operatic and symphonic soloist. She has also collaborated with a number of renowned chamber groups and musicians. In addition to her training as a performer, Niovi has an honours degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where she underwent Advanced Professional Training in overcoming stage fright techniques and self-management from the Department of Psychology.
