Biography

Among his numerous acclaimed appearances in the course of the 2015/2016 season, Julian Prégardien’s rendition of Hylas in Les Troyens (Berlioz) caused a sensation at the opening night of the Hamburg Staatsoper under the baton of Kent Nagano. He also appeared in a staged production of Hans Zender’s well-known “composed interpretation” of Schubert’s Winterreise at the Grand Théâtre in Luxembourg. In the course of the 2016/17 season, Julian Prégardien will cover the role of Tamino in a new Dijon production of The Magic Flute conducted by Christophe Rousset. In July 2017, the young lyric tenor will also give his debut performance at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich in the title role of Carl Maria von Weber’s Oberon.

Concert appearances during the 2016/17 season will include Bach’s St Matthew Passion with Orchestre symphonique de Montréal conducted by Kent Nagano, and Julian Prégardien will sing the same work on tour with René Jacobs conducting the RIAS Kammerchor and the Berlin Akademie für Alte Musik. He will also sing in Bach’s Mass in B Minor with the Windsbacher Knabenchor, the Christmas Oratorio with Dresden Kreuzchor, and Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass with the Danish SymfoniOrkestret conducted by András Schiff. Accompanied by the Berlin Akademie für Alte Musik, Prégardien appears in a programme of Handel arias entitled “Biblical Scenes”, which will be featured at Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, the Konzerthaus in Berlin and the Prinzregententheater in Munich. He is likewise invited to return to Salzburger Festspiele (in works by Michael Haydn conducted by Ádám Fischer) and to Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik (in a Telemann recital with the ensemble Hamburger Ratsmusik).

At Dresden Musikfestspiele and other venues, Julian Prégardien is scheduled to appear in a special Monteverdi project along with his father Christoph Prégardien and the renowned early music ensemble Anima Eterna Brugge conducted by Jos van Immerseel. In this programme – which focuses on the father-son connections in the two Monteverdi operas Ulisse and Orfeo – the two singers already scored a resounding success at Salzburg Pfingstfestspiele in 2015; further appearances are planned for the 2017/2018 season in Bruges, Antwerp and other cities.

Invited by composer Thomas Larcher and the Linz Bruckner Orchestra conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, Julian Prégardien will sing Larcher’s Padmore Cycle for the first time in November 2016: the two concerts will take place in Linz (Brucknerhaus) and Vienna (Musikverein).

Julian Prégardien is also one of the renowned soloists featured in a major project co-hosted by the Schubertiade in Hohenems/Schwarzenberg (Austria) and by London Wigmore Hall, consisting in the complete performance of all Schubert lieder in a series of recitals held between 2015 and 2017. In May 2016, he sang his first recitals at the Toppan Hall in Tokyo; in early 2017, he is once more invited to Japan to perform Schubert’s Winterreise with Masato Suzuki. Further recitals will lead him to perform at the Philharmonie in Cologne and at the Reitstadel in Neumarkt (in a father-son programme accompanied by pianist/composer Michael Gees), at the Heinrich Heine Society in Düsseldorf and at the Historisches Rathaus in Freiburg (in Schumann/Heine song cycles with pianist Eric le Sage). For the 2016/2017 season, Julian Prégardien has also conceived a series of fascinating recitals for the Haus zum Lindengarten in Zurich, including an entire weekend on the subject of Winterreise performance practice, and a "Liederfrühling" in collaboration with the "Freunde des Liedes" association and the International Studio of Zurich Opera House.

Recent recordings featuring Julian Prégardien include: Bach’s St Matthew Passion (also on DVD) and the St John Passion with Concerto Köln and Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks; Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with Hamburg Staatsoper Orchestra and Ballet (DVD); Rameau’s Zaïs with Christoph Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques (selected by the German Record Critics’ Circle for their Quarterly Prize); Mozart’s Entführung aus dem Serail with René Jacobs and the Berlin Akademie für Alte Musik, and two solo Lied CD’s: An die Geliebte with pianist Christoph Schnackertz and Schubertiade with a trio of instrumentalists.
On his own label P.RHEI founded in early 2016, Prégardien is preparing CD releases of the two Schubert cycles Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise in variegated, innovative performance settings: live recordings in cooperation with the two broadcasters Saarländischer Rundfunk and Schweizer Kulturradio. Hans Zender’s “composed interpretation” of Winterreise will be the first of these, to be released in late 2016.

Born in Frankfurt in 1984, Julian Prégardien was trained in the Limburger Dommusik and went on to study voice at Freiburg Musikhochschule. Since 2013, he has been teaching the oratorio class at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. In 2016, he will start teaching masterclasses: in Munich on the subject of “Adornments in Schubert”, as well as at the Copenhagen Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium and the Salzburg Mozarteum.
